Clandestine lab uncovered; man charged - Shortland

A man has been charged after a clandestine lab was discovered at a Newcastle home yesterday.

After receiving information, officers from the Newcastle City Proactive Crime Team executed a search warrant at a home on Matron Street, Shortland, about 2.30pm (Thursday 10 September 2020), where they spoke with a 40-year-old man.

Upon entering the premises, police located a large number of chemicals and equipment consistent with the manufacture of prohibited drugs at the rear of the property.

A crime scene was established, and specialist police from the Drug and Firearms Squad's Chemical Operations Team deployed to examine the property, which is currently in the process of being dismantled.

The 40-year-old man was arrested and taken to Waratah Police Station.

He was charged with manufacture small quantity prohibited drug and possess prohibited drug.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Friday 11 September 2020), where he was formally bail refused to reappear at the same court on Monday 14 September 2020.

Investigations are ongoing.
