Clean Up Australia Day a success

Volunteers removed more than 27 cubic metres of rubbish from the local environment on Sunday's Clean Up Australia Day and Friday's Schools Clean Up Day in Eurobodalla.

More than 160 volunteers took part in the event across 37 Eurobodalla community and school sites.

Eurobodalla's Clean Up coordinator Maree Cadman said that while volunteer numbers were slightly down locally this year, site registrations were the same as last year.

She said small items such as plastic and metal bottle tops and cigarette butts were the most commonly-collected.

"Plastic packaging, including confectionery wrappers, were the next most commonly-encountered item," she said.

"Similar to last year, volunteers reported significantly less recyclable beverage containers, such as glass bottles, aluminium cans and plastic bottles.

"This could be attributed to a number of factors including the Return and Earn recycling scheme encouraging more recycling and individuals collecting rubbish year-round on their daily walks."

In all, an estimated 164 full rubbish bags - the equivalent of 16.5 cubic metres - were collected by volunteers and students.

An additional 11.5 cubic metres of bulky items, comprising things like dumped furniture, household items, foam, tyres and building materials including asbestos, was also recovered from bushland at South Durras and North Narooma.

Ms Cadman praised all those who stepped up to clean up.

"Those who took part have provided real help to Eurobodalla's wildlife and natural areas by removing litter from our streets, beaches, parks, bushland and waterways," she said.

"With ideal weather conditions on both school and community clean-up days, it was another successful event."
