The start of October means it's time to start preparing your property for the upcoming fire season, well ahead of the Fire Danger Period.
Property owners must slash grass, remove leaf litter, clean gutters, clear fallen branches and maintain defendable space around homes and outbuildings before the Fire Danger Period is announced.
This year, Council is also focussed on the role that equipment can play in sparking fires or making them worse. Grass build-up around some engines and exhaust systems can ignite during operation, which can cause fires.
Before and during the Fire Danger Period, we encourage residents to inspect and clean:
- mowers (including ride-on mowers)
- tractors
- slashers
- other equipment.
To reduce fire risk, store equipment clear of nearby vegetation wherever possible.
Mayor Naomi Joiner said she was grateful to the community for their efforts.
"Thank you for putting in the work now to help slow down fires on your property. It's a vital way to protect yourself and others, and ensure our fire fighters can focus their efforts on unavoidable fires and issues that arise," said Cr Joiner.
