A strategic 2-hectare expansion of the Northern Territory Livestock Exporters Association Berrimah Export Yards will enable construction of new retention ponds at the site.

This critical infrastructure will enhance environmental protections at the facility.

The Northern Territory's cattle industry is worth more than $1 billion annually.

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering certainty for the Northern Territory's live export industry, with an expansion of the Northern Territory Livestock Exporters Association (NTLEA) Berrimah Export Yards.

Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment Joshua Burgoyne said today's announcement was a win for the cattle industry in the Northern Territory.

"The Berrimah Export Yards are vital infrastructure for the Territory cattle industry and the proximity to the Darwin Port is extremely strategic for exporters," said Mr Burgoyne.

"As the Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment, I am committed to helping the yards prosper in their current location for many years to come. Part of that is providing more room for expansion and implementing enhanced mechanisms to protect the environment.

"Over the last 12 to 18 months, we have worked with industry to plan environmental improvements, including improved drainage and water retention measures, to ensure we can deliver certainty for this important industry now and into the future."

The cattle industry is one of the Territory's powerhouse industries, valued at more than $1 billion annually and delivering real economic benefits for regional and remote communities.

Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries Gerard Maley said during its year of growth, certainty, and security, the CLP Government would continue reinforcing the Territory's position as the nation's leading live export hub.

"We are securing the future of this incredibly important industry, which has recorded its strongest performance in more than a decade under the CLP," said Mr Maley.

"Every $1 generated by the cattle industry generates an additional 50 cents of benefit to the broader Territory economy. A stronger cattle export industry underpins a stronger Territory."

NTLEA Chief Executive Officer Patrick Moran said a thriving cattle export industry was the bedrock of a strong Territory economy.

"The Berrimah Export Yards are the jewel of the industry, and the Finocchiaro CLP Government's ongoing support will ensure that the yards can continue to improve and expand into the future," said Mr Moran.

Northern Territory Cattlemen's Association Chief Executive Officer Romy Carey said: "Backing the live export trade means backing Territory jobs, regional communities and the cattle industry that underpins more than a billion dollars of economic activity across the Northern Territory."
