CLP Pledges $15M To Aid Crime Victims Over 5 Years

NT Government

Territorians who have experienced the trauma of crime deserve more than words - they deserve action.

As part of the biggest law and order Budget in the Territory's history, the Finocchiaro CLP Government is putting victims first and continuing to reform a justice system that, for too long, has prioritised offenders.

Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby said the 2025-26 Budget delivered certainty and begins the long task of rebuilding a broken system.

"Under Labor, offenders walked free while victims were left behind," said Ms Boothby,

"We're changing that; we've already strengthened the laws, and now this Budget delivers the funding certainty Labor failed to provide.

"This will help clearing the backlog, repair the system, and make sure victims are supported into the future."

Budget 2025-26 includes an additional $15 million over five years to support victims of crime, including:

$12.2 million for compensation payments and frontline Crime Victim Service Unit staff.$2 million for programs such as the Vehicle Re-Secure Program.$800,000 in grants for trauma counselling for victims.A 30% increase to the Victims of Crime Levy - making offenders pay for the harm they've caused.Clearing the backlog of financial assistance claims.

"We inherited net debt projected to reach $12.3 billion by 2027-28, but victims can't wait," said Ms Boothby,

"We're focused, we're acting, and we'll fund what matters. This is about compassion and accountability.

"Crime won't be fixed overnight, but victims deserve to know they're not alone because our government is backing them, especially in our year of action, certainty and security."

The full 2025-26 Budget will be handed down in Parliament on Tuesday.
