CM Fortifies Defence, Security Ties with Japan

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is positioning the Territory at the heart of Indo-Pacific security, building partnerships that keep Australia safe and deliver lasting opportunities for Territorians.

With world-class training areas, a strong Australian Defence Force presence, and the Marine Rotational Force, the NT stands as a premier and trusted partner of choice for trilateral training and cooperation.

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro today met with Vice-Minister Kano, one of Japan's most senior defence officials, and General Morita, Chief of Staff of Japan's Air Self-Defense Force, to showcase the NT's strategic role in regional security.

The Chief Minister said these discussions reinforced the Territory's position as a reliable host for trilateral activities between Australia, Japan and the United States - including the first joint F-35A training to be conducted across northern Australia during Exercise Southern Cross in July 2026.

"This was a valuable opportunity to deepen our ties with one of our closest allies and to ensure the Territory remains at the forefront of Australia's defence engagement in the region.

"By working closely with senior Defence and Government officials, I am making sure the Territory is well-positioned for opportunities that will grow our economy, strengthen our communities, and keep our region safe."

Japan Air Self Defense Force, Lieutenant General Shigeki Muto (retired) and member of the DefenceNT Strategy Group said the Chief Minister was able to effectively highlight the strategic location of the Indo-Pacific region and strengths of the Northern Territory to senior leaders in the Ministry of Defense, promoting it as an ideal location for current and future Australia-US-Japan training activities.

"It was clear that the Chief Minister and her Government are proud of the Northern Territory's role in defence and regional security and will continue working to support and enable allied and partner forces requirements, including that of the Japanese."

Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro said the Territory's strategic importance is undeniable, and only through sustained engagement and strong advocacy will we turn that position into long-term opportunity.

"This mission is part of a deliberate campaign to ensure the Northern Territory is front and centre when decisions are made about training, investment and capability.

"The Territory is sending a clear message: we are not just a participant in regional security, we are a leader and a partner of choice," she said.
