Cold Weekend for SE Aus, Calm Weather Elsewhere

BOM
Hello, Miriam at the Bureau with your national weather forecast for tomorrow, Saturday the 16th of August, with a quick look ahead at Sunday's forecast as well. We will start, though, with a look at tomorrow's weather map.

Now, showery wintry weather is expected to continue across south eastern parts of the country on Saturday as we're caught between two cold fronts. The first cold front will be moving off the East coast through the course of Saturday, and the second cold front will be approaching the southeast later in the day. That means snow to low levels, chilly conditions, and small hail are all a possibility across those south eastern states through Saturday.

Elsewhere, though, we are looking at much more settled conditions through our Saturday. High pressure in the West, pushing into central parts of the continent as well, means mainly sunny conditions in those areas. That is a trend that will continue across much of northern Australia as well.

State-by-state forecast for Saturday

Queensland forecast

Chance of morning fog through eastern parts of Queensland tomorrow, then a dry, sunny and settled day following. For Brisbane, we are expecting a sunny day and a top of 24 degrees. Most other areas seeing temperatures within a couple of degrees of the average.

New South Wales/ACT forecast

The chance of morning fog and frost in the north-east. Then a partly cloudy day across the state. Cool with the wind chill playing a factor in our temperatures. Showers are possible, mainly about the ranges, and we may even see the slight chance of a thunderstorm through parts of the north-east.

Now snow to low levels is possible through the course of Saturday, so that means not just about our south-east alpine areas, but also possible about the higher ranges of the Great Dividing Range. So at places like the Oberon Plateau and the Barrington Tops, although snowfall in these areas is likely to be quite a bit lighter than further south.

Sydney: Partly cloudy, top of 18 degrees

Canberra: A shower or two, top of 12 degrees

Victoria forecast

A showery day, mainly on and south of the ranges, with small hail possible through the south as well. We are also likely to see snow about our ranges as low as around 700 m or 800 m. Cool conditions right across the state, with winds once again lowering that 'feels like' temperature.

Melbourne: Showers through the day, top of 12 degrees

Tasmania forecast

The chance of some showers, mainly in the west, with some small hail possible in those areas too. Snow down to around 400 m or 500 m in the morning, gradually lifting through the day to around 600 m or 700 m.

Hobart: A shower or two, top of 12 degrees

South Australia forecast

Fairly isolated showers across southern parts of South Australia on Saturday morning, but a burst of more scattered showers will move through in the afternoon and evening with this second cold front. We could also see some small hail across the south-east of the state. Further inland, it will be sunnier and milder.

Adelaide: Showers increasing, top of 14 degrees

Western Australia forecast

The chance of morning frost across southern inland parts of the state. A few morning fogs as well. It will be a generally sunny and settled day following across Western Australia, with temperatures pushing above average along the west coast.

Perth: Sunny day, top of 20 degrees

Northern Territory forecast

The chance of morning fog across eastern parts of the Top End. Then we are expecting a fresh south-easterly surge to start moving through from the south, so temperatures will generally be within a degree or two of average, but we will see some cooler, gustier conditions pushing in from the south as the day goes on.

Darwin: Sunny day, top of 33 degrees

Sunday forecast

On Sunday, we're likely to see a second cold front and low pressure system moving across those south-eastern parts of the country. That means showers, small hail, cold conditions, and snow to low levels are likely to continue for parts of southern South Australia, southern New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania. Temperatures very low in those areas as well. You can see 12 and 13 on the forecast, with the wind chill factor making those 'feels like' temperatures even lower.

After some morning fogs through parts of the east and south, we are expecting generally sunny and settled conditions in those areas. The exception is going to be along the west coast, where a west coast trough is expected to deepen through the day and generate a few showers across the south-west corner of the country through the course of Sunday. Apart from that, we are likely to see some elevated fire dangers about parts of the Top End in particular, so watch out for that one on Sunday.

Now you can find the detailed weekend forecast for your area via the Bureau's website, the BOM Weather app and social media. Have a great weekend and we'll catch you next time.
