CommBank Emerging Socceroos 2025: Day One Highlights

The CommBank Emerging Socceroos Championships officially kicked off with a day full of exciting action as National Team coaches and staff watched closely.

The opening ceremony set the tone for the day before the Under 15 and Under 16 competitors quickly took centre stage wasting no time finding the back of the net.

While the many spectators in attendance were glued to the action, education workshops and activations behind the scenes added substance to an already jam-packed day.

Raising the Bar Across the Board

The CommBank Emerging Socceroos Championships are a crucial stepping stone for Australia's top youth footballers. However, their impact extends well beyond the pitch, influencing every pillar of the game, including coaching.

General Manager of Coach Education at Football Australia, Miles Downie, said the Championships provide a rare opportunity to influence and elevate coaching standards nationally.

"The players here are a product of the community game," Downie said.

"National team coaches only get a few days with them so the real work happens at grassroots level, and that starts with quality coaching."

Coach development is a cornerstone of Football Australia's broader strategy to improve player pathways. Through tailored education sessions, mentoring from FA staff, and on-field observation, participating coaches are being empowered with tools to better support young players in their everyday clubs.

"If a coach can help a player fall in love with the game and give them key insights to improve tactically, that can be transformational," Downie continued.

"We're not just developing players-we're developing coaches, referees, and the entire ecosystem."

From showcasing key behaviours seen in world-class players to mentoring emerging coaches, the CommBank Emerging Championships provide lasting value across all areas of the game.

Data Driven Development

Player development is front and centre at the 2025 Emerging Socceroos Championships and with the help of cutting-edge testing and technology the pathway to National Teams is better tailored to unlock each player's full potential.

Over 500 players underwent testing prior to Day One action, with assessments designed to mirror those expected at professional and national team levels. These tests included sprint speed, jump height, and body measurements, offering coaches deeper insight into players' physical attributes alongside their on-field performances.

Football Australia's Head of Research and Development, Rob Duffield, spoke about how this testing can benefit the players.

"The championships aren't just about competition they're an educational experience," Duffield said.

"We're introducing players to high-level testing and building a clearer picture of the physical development across the country."

Data from the testing helps National Team Coaches identify talent, assess player maturity, and make informed selections. It also builds a benchmark database for Member Federations and players to understand their place within the pathways.

The testing began with Football Australia's Perform Plus warm-up to boost performance and reduce injury risk. Players then completed a 20-meter sprint to measure speed, a counter-movement jump to assess lower-body power, and body measurements including height, weight, and seated height.

The results revealed a mix of fast, powerful, and physically developed athletes, including sprint times under three seconds and jumps over 50 centimeters.

Sport Integrity Australia Provides Valuable Lessons

As part of the broader athlete development focus at the 2025 CommBank Emerging Socceroos Championships, Sport Integrity Australia has been on-site delivering vital education around clean sport, child safeguarding, and supplement safety.

Clean Sport Educator at Sports Integrity Australia, Kip Smith, spoke about the importance of their mission at the CommBank Emerging Socceroos Championships.

"We're here to raise awareness around things like supplement use, medication safety, and what to do if something in sport makes you uncomfortable. These are things young athletes need to understand early in their careers."

"If you just go close your eyes and pick one off the shelf there's an inherently very high risk that you can find yourself with a banned substance. So we're trying to protect these athletes from being in that situation and that's obviously a super important thing for someone at the very start of their career to know as well."

The Sports Integrity education offering is just one of several off-field initiatives at the Championships aimed at supporting the next generation of Football stars.
