Commitment for new V/Locity carriages – a win for local jobs

Geelong and Ballarat lines will welcome extra 54 V/Locity carriages, as the Andrews Government announces that if re-elected, it will commit $340 million for 18 new trains for two of the state's busiest regional lines.

Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chief Executive Mark Stone AM said that investment in regional rail is critical for the continued prosperity of regional Victoria.

"An improved travel experience for passengers on regional rail is essential to increase the liveability and attractiveness of regional Victoria for local residents, visitors and businesses," said Mr Stone.

Victoria has a strong and competitive local transport manufacturing sector, which is perfectly placed to design, engineer and manufacture high quality locally made carriages.

"Investments like this are critical for the sustainable growth of Victoria's transport manufacturing sector, boosting and retaining local jobs.

"In the lead up to the State Election, it is great to see continued investment in transport," said Mr Stone.

This investment, which is predicted to support 500 jobs in Victoria's southeast, also presents great opportunities to boost the skills of young apprentices and trainees in Victoria.

The Victorian Chamber will continue to advocate on behalf of Victorian businesses for more local content and increased apprenticeships and traineeships opportunities across our state, so Victoria can build its future workforce and keep its industry strong.
