Committee appointed to help protect Tasmanian commercial tenants

Elise Archer,Minister for Building and Construction

The Tasmanian Government is committed to implementing the National Code of Conduct for commercial tenancies, which provides protections and rent reductions for tenants experiencing financial hardship as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Code is already in operation with mediators appointed, and commercial tenants and landlords using the Code's provisions.

As part our commitment, a Commercial Code Administration Committee has also been established.

The role of the Committee is to promote awareness of the Code of Conduct, monitor its operation and encourage use of its provisions by commercial tenancy lessees and lessors.

The Committee will be chaired by the Director of Consumer Affairs and Fair Trading, Mr Peter Graham.

I have also appointed the following members to the Committee after receiving nominations by stakeholder organisations representing lessees, lessors, and small and medium sized businesses:

Tasmanian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (TCCI) - representing commercial lessees

  • Michael Bailey (CEO, TCCI)
  • Colleen Reardon (COO, TCCI)

Property Council of Australia - representing commercial lessors

  • Ian Wells (Chairman, KnightFrank Tas)
  • Max Cameron (Partner, MinterEllison)

Tasmanian Small Business Council – representing small to medium businesses

  • Robert Mallett (Chair, Tasmanian Small Business Council)

The Committee will provide an invaluable role to promote, monitor and encourage use of the Act by commercial lessees and lessors as we work together to recover and rebuild from COVID-19.
