Community and Council are celebrating the formal naming of Piccabeen Park in Bangalow. Recently, the Geographical Names Board of NSW formally named the park after the Indigenous name for the Bangalow palm tree and the baskets made from its fronds.

Michael Lyon, Byron Shire Council Mayor, said that it was fantastic news to hear about the renaming.

"The naming of this park has been a long time in the making. Team Piccabeen – the community group of volunteers who help to maintain the park, first approached Council in 2022 about naming the area. Council then worked with the group and Arakwal Corporation to take the name to the Geographical Names Board of NSW," he said.

"We are grateful for everyone's role in this process and that another place in the Byron Shire acknowledges the Traditional Owners and language."

Christobel Munson from Team Piccabeen said that they have been working with Council and Traditional Owners to not only name the park, but also ensure native plants are showcased in the area.

"We have been busy establishing native plants and a bush tucker garden for everyone to enjoy and encourage the community to come down to this beautiful space and enjoy everything it has to offer," she said.

Piccabeen Park is located next to Deacon Street in Bangalow.

Byron Shire Council's Open Spaces team, Team Piccabeen, Bangalow Land and Rivercare and Bangalow Historical Society all work together to maintain the space.
