Corangamite Shire will be better prepared to face more severe storms and droughts, changes to rainfall patterns, and rising sea levels, thanks to Council's Climate Change Action Plan 2025-2029.
The Shire is already feeling the impacts of climate change with records showing more days over 35 degrees, a longer and more intense fire season, and more days of heavy rain.
"A 2022 report from the Climate Council says the Shire is in one of the most climate-vulnerable regions in Australia and predicts 10% of our properties will be at risk by 2050," Cr Makin said.
"Council has the responsibility to minimise the risks posed to the Shire and increase our community members readiness and resilience to face these risks."
Cr Makin said the plan, which was adopted at the May Council meeting, will contribute to Council's decisions and operations over the next four years.
"The plan has 28 actions aimed at mitigating the effects of climate change and adapting to confront the challenges that are forecast.
"They are grouped under five objectives:
- strengthening the resilience of Council operations;
- supporting the community to reduce emissions;
- strengthening the Shire's preparedness and response to emergency and other climate-related events;
- supporting a climate resilient agricultural sector; and
- large-scale emission reduction and opportunities for carbon "drawdown" -- where it is captured and stored.
"Those objectives take in a huge range of activities, from continuing to improve recycling, to increasing the number of electric vehicles in Council's fleet.
"They cover infrastructure like flood warning gauges, and strategic tree planting to keep streets and public spaces shady.
"More strategic steps include exploring microgrids, green hydrogen, partnerships and educational resources to help empower our community.
"There's a lot in it and I encourage everyone to read the plan at corangamite.vic.gov.au/CCAP."
Cr Makin thanked the Climate Change Community Reference Group and community members who gave input and feedback to help develop the final plan.
