Edward River Council residents are invited to take home free compost as part of Council's annual Community Compost Giveaway, returning to the Deniliquin Saleyards on Saturday 24 October 2026. The event will run from 8.00am to 2.00pm and is open exclusively to residents of the Edward River Council area.
The giveaway is one of the ways Council is reinvesting in the community and recognising residents' ongoing participation in the three-bin kerbside collection service. By covering the cost of the compost giveaway, Council is ensuring local households can share in the benefits of a waste management program that continues to achieve strong results and high levels of community participation.
Mayor Ashley Hall said the event was a practical example of the circular economy in action.
"Our community has embraced the three-bin system and continues to do an excellent job separating waste correctly," Mayor Hall said.
"This giveaway is our way of saying thank you while helping residents improve their gardens with a valuable local resource."
Acting CEO Nathan Holahan said the success of the three-bin service was helping divert material from landfill and creating positive outcomes for the environment.
"It's fantastic to see the program continuing to perform strongly, with residents playing an important role in reducing waste and supporting more sustainable outcomes," Mr Holahan said.
"Events like the Community Compost Giveaway demonstrate how those efforts come full circle, turning food and garden waste from our green bins into something useful that can be returned to the community."
The compost, produced from locally collected organic material, is ideal for gardens, lawns and landscaping projects. Residents are encouraged to bring their own trailers, utes, bags or buckets. Council will have a loader on site to assist with collections.
To ensure there is enough compost for everyone, residents are asked to limit collections to two loads per household. Trucks will not be permitted.
Traffic management will be in place on the day and all attendees must follow Council directions, remain in their vehicles unless directed otherwise and ensure loads are covered before leaving the site.
The event may be postponed in the event of unsuitable weather conditions.
