Community Invited To Celebrate First 'Changing Places' Facility In Shire

Bega Valley Shire Council invites the community to the official opening of the Tathra Playspace – Accessible and High Needs Amenities Building on Thursday 23 October at 2.30pm. The event will be held at Taylors Square Playground, Andy Poole Drive, Tathra.

Minister for Regional NSW Tara Moriarty said she was delighted to see the new facility opening for the community.

"The NSW Governments understands the importance of access to inclusive spaces for communities to make meaningful social connections," Minister Moriarty said.

"This purpose-built facility will boost wellbeing, support dignity and accessibility for people with high care needs, their families and carers. I congratulate the Bega Valley Shire Council on the opening of this project."

"The newly constructed amenities include a 'Changing Places' facility for those with high accessibility needs. It is the first of its kind in the Bega Valley," said Council's Parks, Aquatics and Recreation Manager, John Grady.

"It includes a larger-than-standard accessible toilet, shower, change hoist and changing facility, providing amenities for people who cannot use standard accessible toilets.

"The new building also includes new unisex personal toilet cubicles with changing benches, two standard accessible cubicles with baby change tables, and new outdoor showers which are already being used by the community since completion in September."

Dr Michael Holland, Member for Bega and Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Health said this is an outstanding example of how targeted investment can make a real difference to people's lives.

"The new Tathra amenities building is not just infrastructure – this is about dignity, inclusion and supporting choice for the health and wellbeing of people with high care needs, their families and carers," Dr Holland said.

"Funded by a $600,000 grant through the NSW Government's Stronger Country Communities Fund, this project delivers on the Minns Labor Government's commitment to creating accessible, inclusive and connected community spaces.

"I commend Bega Valley Shire Council for their leadership in delivering this much-needed facility for the Tathra community."

Mayor Russell Fitzpatrick expressed gratitude for the support received to deliver the valuable project.

"Council thanks the NSW Government for its support, allowing us to demonstrate our commitment to providing safe and accessible infrastructure for the community," Mayor Fitzpatrick said.

"With the new facility located next to the Tathra Surf Life Saving Club and the 'Everyone Can Play' inclusive playspace, Taylors Square is now a more accessible and inclusive community space. We're very pleased to be able to provide facilities for those with high needs, their careers, and their families.

"I look forward to formally thanking everyone involved in delivering the project at the official opening event."

This project was made possible through funding from the NSW Government.
