Community invited to take part in city centre Parking Forum

Members of the community are invited to take part in a forthcoming Parking Forum on Monday May 27 to discuss how parking can support the ongoing development and success of Bendigo's city centre over the next 10 to 15 years.

Hosted by the City of Greater Bendigo, the forum is being held as part of the development of a new Parking Futures Plan. The city centre currently has 11,000 car parking spaces, which is the equivalent of 22 Queen Elizabeth Ovals.

The public forum will feature keynote speaker and transport consultant Steven Burgess, whose past expertise includes managing Brisbane's entire parking system.

Mr Burgess' focus is on creating a city that is a great place to visit and attracts people, investment and development. He has been working with the City to develop a set of objectives and draft actions that will be discussed at the forum.

City Director Strategy and Growth Bernie O'Sullivan said that the new Parking Futures Plan was being developed alongside a review of the 2005 CBD Plan.

"The new City Centre Plan will build on past work and include new policy directions to support the type of development that we want and need in the city centre," Mr O'Sullivan said.

"We've seen some great developments in the city centre that have been guided by the current plan, and we've been working with the private sector to ensure that future investment and development is guided by an up-to-date, contemporary plan.

"We need to look at what works best for Bendigo's particular circumstances and how a number of factors, including parking, can contribute to a financially strong, resilient, creative city of the future where there are plenty of things to do and see.

"I encourage people to register to attend the Parking Forum and to have their say as part of the new Parking Futures Plan."

The Parking Forum will take place at the Engine Room, 58 View Street next to The Capital on Monday May 27 from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. To attend the event, please register at [email protected]
