Community Praised For Mardi Gras 2024 Parade

Police Operations in relation to the 2024 Mardi Gras Parade in Sydney's CBD have concluded.

The high-visibility and mobile police operation in place yesterday (Saturday 2 March 2024), was aimed at ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the community and targeting anti-social behaviour and alcohol-related crime.

Operation Commander, Assistant Commissioner Anthony Cooke APM, said the overall behaviour of crowds at the Mardi Gras parade was pleasing, with an estimated 120,000 spectators and 12,500 participants attending the event.

"Yesterday's celebration was a great example of a successful Mardi Gras event. The majority of people were well-behaved and enjoyed the event safely and responsibly," Assistant Commissioner Cooke said.

While there were no major incidents, police arrested seven men and two women for entering the parade route as the Premier approached. Police on parade and Public Order officers arrested the nine prior to them engaging with the Premier. The Premier continued and left the route as intended.

All nine were taken to Surry Hills Police Station, with inquiries continuing.

Earlier, a 20-year-old woman was arrested at Hyde Park after allegedly attempting to enter the marshalling area in possession of a packet of screws.

She was taken to Surry Hills Police Station and issued a future service court attendance notice for possession of an offensive implement.

Extensive road closures were put in place to facilitate the parade; and, while a small number remain in place, major roads have been successfully reopened.
