The Cook Labor Government is progressing planning for the upgrade of the Sutherland Street Rail Bridge.
Built in 1913 and located east of City West Station, the Sutherland Street Rail Bridge is an important piece of transport infrastructure that carries Fremantle, Airport and Ellenbrook Line rail services.
The project intends to extend the service life of the bridge and reduce future maintenance requirements, helping to support the continued safe and reliable operation of Perth's rail network.
Jacobs Group (Australia) Pty Ltd has been appointed as a design services consultant for the project and will work with the Office of Major Transport Infrastructure Delivery to develop the detailed design, including investigations and planning to support upcoming construction activities.
Expressions of interest are also being sought from suitably qualified contractors to participate in the project's Construction Only Alliance, an approach that will bring together the expertise of industry and government to deliver the works safely and efficiently.
The Cook Labor Government has committed $50 million towards the project as part of its ongoing investment in maintaining and renewing critical transport infrastructure across the State.
Construction on the Sutherland Street Rail Bridge upgrade is anticipated to commence in late 2027.
As stated by Transport and Major Infrastructure Minister Rita Saffioti:
"The Sutherland Street Rail Bridge has supported Perth's rail network for more than 100 years, and this project will help ensure it continues to do so safely and reliably into the future.
"The appointment of a design consultant and release of expressions of interest for a construction partner are important milestones as we continue progressing this $50 million investment in critical rail infrastructure."
