There is majority support for the installation of four raised pedestrian crossings on Owen Street and Hawke Street in Huskisson, as revealed by community consultation held in June 2025.

Survey results identified 63 percent of respondents would like to see the construction of four raised 'wombat' pedestrian crossings on the busy stretch of Huskisson Village. Council received 133 unique responses with 21 percent against the crossings and 16 percent supporting some of the proposed crossings.

Mayor Patricia White said the project was being funded under the Get NSW Active program which aims to improve the safety and movement of pedestrians.

"Thanks to the Husky community for taking the time to comment on the proposed locations and design of the crossings," Cr White said.

"This support shows that people are keen to see better connected and safer pedestrian access that allows more people to walk or ride instead of driving for short trips," she said.

"Council will now move forward with delivering the proposed crossings which will provide pedestrian priority crossing points, but will also have minimal impact to car access, parking and businesses in the area."

Member for South Coast, Liza Butler said she was pleased to see the village of Huskisson benefit from funding through the NSW Government's Get NSW Active program.

"As the local Member, I've strongly advocated for safer and more accessible infrastructure in our region, and this investment is a direct result of that ongoing work," Ms Butler said.

"Improving pedestrian and vehicle safety in and around this popular hotspot will not only enhance community amenity but also support local businesses and boost tourism," she said.

"I look forward to seeing this project delivered and the positive impact it will have for residents, visitors, and the broader South Coast community."

Locations include two mid-block crossings along Owen Street, one on Currambene Street at the intersection with Owen Street, and one on Hawke Street.

The project consists of:

  • Four raised 'wombat' pedestrian crossings, 3 metres to 4 metres wide
  • Upgraded lighting to suit the crossings
  • Kerb and gutter and drainage
  • Landscaping to encourage pedestrian directional movement while improving the aesthetics of the crossings
  • New parking along Hawke Street to off-set parking spaces lost at crossings.

The project is fully funded by Transport for NSW for design and construction.
