The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts continues to progress a broad program of community infrastructure works across Norfolk Island, with a number of projects now completed and others advancing steadily through planning and delivery.
At Norfolk Island Central School, several priority upgrades have recently been completed, delivering improvements to safety, accessibility and learning environments. These works include the science laboratory upgrade, re-roofing of Building N, the installation of new accessibility ramp access to Building D, updated evacuation plans, a new fire detection system for the Learning Hub, and rust removal on both school buses.
Tenders for works for extensions to the bus shed have been released to contractors, with the project targeting completion by 30 June 2026. Planning feedback has also been received for the accessibility and teachers' car park project, requesting additional landscaping and drainage details, with the design now being updated to address these requirements.
Significant progress continues across Norfolk Island Health and Residential Aged Care Services (NIHRACS) projects. The removal of the Teeny Menzies building and the server room upgrade have both been completed, with the upgraded server room enabling the creation of a new meeting room and four additional workstations for NIHRACS staff. The new laundry project remains on track for completion by 31 May 2026, with key milestones already achieved, including the installation of new gutters and fire-rated windows and doors along with vinyl flooring. The next phase of works is now commencing, including electrical, fire and plumbing fit-off works both internally and externally.
Materials to support modifications to the NIHRACS imaging office are on their way to island, with works scheduled to be completed by the end of June. Plans for upgrades to Mawson Units has been finalised, and relocation works are under way to enable construction to commence. Water testing of the recently found well at the Teeny Menzies has returned positive results, confirming the supply will be used to service the new laundry, with trenching works expected to commence shortly. Design development for the overflow car park is also progressing.
Elsewhere on island, at the police station, the fire detection system upgrade is nearing completion, with works expected to be finalised by early May. In Selwyn Reserve, clearing activities are now complete and weed maintenance and boundary fence works are under way. A tender for a new filleting station at Cascade Pier has been issued to contractors and will close on 4 May 2026. Weed maintenance at Cascade Reserve also remains ongoing.
All project timeframes remain subject to weather conditions and logistics. The Department remains committed to keeping the community informed and thanks residents, businesses and visitors for their continued cooperation and support as these projects progress, helping to strengthen services and infrastructure for Norfolk Island's future.
