Council has recently completed the review of the Community Vision.
In undertaking the review, Councillors sought input from a range of stakeholders across a variety of platforms.
Councillors wanted to hear from as many people as possible to capture the range of views that exist in our community.
Councillors started receiving this input before the formal engagement commenced and this continued with the community survey, drop-in sessions, and written submissions. Many people in the community have shared their opinions about what was important to them by speaking directly to Councillors since the election last year.
All of these inputs, as well as the feedback and conversations influenced Council through the review process and informed the drafting of the updated Community Vision.
The survey generated report can be found below.
What was clear to Council was the ongoing importance to the community of our environment, heritage, and independence.
The first part of the vision statement articulates those aspects of living in the Borough that our community values and wants to retain:
Queenscliffe is valued for its unique coastline, historic character, and strong local identify.
To reflect this statement, Council included pillars that expand on those aspirations shared by the community:
Our environment
Built, maritime and military history
Community leadership
These pillars also support the last part of the vision statement which says:
We acknowledge and respect the Wadawurrung people and together work to look after the Borough.
The goal of inclusion is captured in the middle part of the vision statement where the aspiration is to be a friendly, respectful and welcoming community. This aspiration is also captured in the Our Community pillar which includes the goal to create a:
Safe inclusive and supportive place for all.
The commitment to managing climate effects is embedded in several pillars including Community Leadership and Our Environment. It is also embedded in the management of risk and good governance. Council actively manages climate impacts throughout the organisation through all work done on behalf of our community.
At its core, the revised vision carries the aspirations of the initial vision. Still included are our shared concerns and common goals, such as caring for our environment, recognising and protecting our heritage, and doing the work to help local business and our community to thrive. Naturally, acknowledgement and respect for Wadawurrung is integral.
A vision statement for a community is necessarily broad. What is important is that as many people as possible recognise something they aspire to within the words.
The revised Community Vision has tried to find this balance, and in doing so has emphasised partnerships, inclusion, support and the protection of the things that make Queenscliffe the unique place we choose to live.
Council would like to thank everyone who contributed. Many of you shared an idea, suggested a change, or emphasised the matters important to our community.
Councillors considered all these elements in drafting the Community Vision adopted at the Ordinary Meeting of Council in July.
