Consumers buying e-scooters or e-skateboards as Christmas gifts this year are being urged to consider the safety and road rules relating to these products before purchasing.
The growing popularity of what are referred to as 'personal mobility devices' is leading to a growing need for these devices to be used safely, especially in the wake of the death of a 24 year old man who fell from an electric skateboard in Carnarvon last week.
Commissioner for Consumer Protection Penny Lipscombe said there are specific safety requirements and restrictions that consumers need to know about.
"Top of the list of safety requirements is wearing a helmet when riding on an e-scooter or e-skateboard, it may save your life," Ms Lipscombe said.
"Current regulations may prevent the use of many of these devices on roads or shared paths and the speed capacity of the device's motor may determine where it is allowed to be used. They are also not allowed to be used at night.
"Some models may be confined for use on private property only so, to avoid disappointment, best to check the rules first before making the purchase. Retailers should also make it clear what restrictions are in place so consumers can make an informed choice and are encouraged to consider stocking helmets alongside these devices to reinforce their importance to consumers."
