  • Coomera State Special School is part of the largest special school investment in Queensland's history, with nine new special schools, out of 22 new schools being delivered across the state.
  • New special schools are delivering education choice for parents, to ensure no Queensland kid is left behind, after Labor's decade of decline.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering a new special school for one of the fastest-growing regions in the state, with construction officially underway on the northern Gold Coast.

The new State Special School in Coomera will cater for up to 162 students and is due to open in 2028, adjoining Coomera Springs State School.

Demand for special school placements has soared after the former Labor Government failed to deliver new special schools or plan for growth during their decade of decline, while enrollments surged by more than 47 per cent since 2019.

The Crisafulli Government is building Queensland's future, with nine new special schools across the state, including in Beenleigh, Moreton Bay South, Townsville and Wynnum-Manly.

ADCO Constructions will carry out the works in Coomera, with Stage 1 featuring 27 learning spaces, administration facilities, a multi-purpose hall, student and staff amenities, a resource centre, canteen, play spaces, car park and a bus pick up/drop off zone.

The local community will have an important role to play in choosing the school's name after an extensive community consultation, along with the appointment of a Foundation Principal.

Premier David Crisafulli said the Government was building the infrastructure needed for Queensland's future with nine new special schools across the State.

"We're delivering more special schools to give parents choice and help kids catch up, keep up and stay in school," Premier Crisafulli said.

"The start of construction is a major milestone for northern Gold Coast families, in just over a year the school will be up and running.

"We believe in giving families the chance to make the decision that's best for their child and their family – and that's what the new special school in Coomera will deliver."

Minister for Education and the Arts John-Paul Langbroek said every child deserved access to specialised education.

"We're building the infrastructure needed to alleviate high demand for specialist education after Labor failed to plan for our State's young minds," Minister Langbroek said.

"This new special school will give more students the opportunity to learn in an environment designed to support their individual needs, closer to home.

"The Crisafulli Government is investing $2.3 billion to deliver 22 new schools across the State, giving families the choice about the education setting that best meets their child's needs and provides access to quality special school facilities in their local communities."

Member for Coomera Michael Crandon said local families had been calling for more options closer to home for years.

"Labor's failure to keep up with our region's growth left our local special school bursting at the seams," Mr Crandon said.

"Our children deserve better, and soon they'll be able to thrive in a supported learning environment – today we begin to see that future brought to life."
