Construction has begun on upgrades to Sandy Creek crossing in Katherine.
The $2.9 million project will see 13 1.8-metre-high culverts added to the crossing, significantly raising its height and helping keep it open to traffic during the wet season.
Local business Remote Industries Australia Pty Ltd has been awarded the contract to deliver the project, which will support up to 19 local jobs during construction. The project is expected to be completed later this year.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Barnaby Joyce said the upgrade will help keep locals safe and connected.
"Increasing the height of the Sandy Creek Crossing will keep locals moving during the wet season and ensure they receive the goods and services they need and deserve," the Deputy Prime Minister said.
"The Federal Liberal and Nationals Government is committed to delivering infrastructure that connects communities and improves safety, while creating jobs and supporting our economic recovery.
"Our investment in the Sandy Creek Crossing upgrade demonstrates that, and is part of our record $110 billion infrastructure investment plan."
Sandy Creek Crossing is located on the Old Humbert River Station Access, approximately 11 kilometres west of the Buchanan Highway and five kilometres east of Yarralin community.
Northern Territory Minister for Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Eva Lawler said the upgrades will provide increased safety and flood immunity, minimising the closure of the Old Humbert Road for local residents, and reducing the delays to deliver services and goods to the community of Yarralin.
"During the wet season our roads can get cut off, stopping services getting in to communities," Minister Lawler said.
"The upgrade to Sandy Creek will increase the community of Yarralin's access to education, health, social and economic opportunities.
"The Northern Territory Government has worked with the Victoria Daly Regional Council to prioritise this project. Supporting local jobs this project is a win-win."
Senator for the Northern Territory Dr Sam McMahon said the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government is continuing to deliver the road upgrades needed to keep Territorians moving.
"This project is being delivered under our Roads to Recovery Program, which is funding road upgrades to facilitate greater access for Australians and improve safety and economic outcomes," Dr McMahon said.
"Once finalised, this critical project will improve traffic flow for community residents, stations and transport companies, keeping drivers safe in unpredictable conditions."
The project is fully funded by the Australian Government under the Roads to Recovery Program.
