Construction Underway on Specialist Disability Accommodation Homes

NT Government

7 September 2022

The Territory Labor Government is empowering and supporting some of our most vulnerable Territorians to live a more independent and fulfilled life.

Construction has commenced on Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) housing developments in Darwin after the Government provided four parcels of land to disability service providers.

The land parcels with a combined value of more than $1 million have been transferred to Carpentaria Disability Services and Life Without Barriers for the construction of four SDA homes to accommodate up to 12 people living with disability, and support staff.

The houses are innovative, fully accessible and will create a home environment where residents can grow their independence while still receiving support.

Construction is now underway on two Carpentaria Disability Services' homes, after a contract was recently awarded to Greenspace Group.

Two more developments will get underway as Life Without Barriers finalises the award of its construction contracts in the coming months.

The Northern Territory's new Disability Strategy's Action Plan prioritises growing the SDA sector, to enable people with extreme functional impairment or high support needs to live more independently.

The Northern Territory has additional land grants for the construction of SDA currently under assessment, including in Alice Springs, and opportunities for SDA dwellings in remote communities are being investigated.

This will provide more suitable accommodation and support for people living with disability right across the Territory.
