Demolition of the former Challenger TAFE site in Beaconsfield is nearing completion and the State Government has now opened public consultation to help guide the future development.
The demolition, which kicked off in April of this year, was an important step in making land available for a modern mixed-use development, aimed at revitalising the Beaconsfield area.
It is expected the new development on the 3.8 hectare site will include a range of affordable and social housing options, as well as community facilities, public open spaces and commercial premises such as restaurants and cafes.
The outcomes of this first phase of consultation will help guide the development of a concept design and the preparation of the local structure plan. These documents set out the way the land is to be used and developed.
DevelopmentWA has also commenced planning for the redevelopment of the site, including an application to rezone the site to "Urban" under the Metropolitan Region Scheme, and is working in close collaboration with the City of Fremantle and the Department of Communities.
In addition to the release of land, including the redevelopment of the Beaconsfield TAFE site, the McGowan Labor Government is investing $2.4 billion in social housing and homelessness measures, including the delivery of 3,300 new social housing dwellings over four years across metropolitan and regional WA.

Community consultation for the redevelopment of the site commences today and runs through to Friday, 28 October 2022.
As stated by Lands Minister John Carey:
"This is about boosting social and affordable housing across Western Australia and our Government understands that to do this we need to diversify our housing options.
"This site has the potential to breathe new life into the Beaconsfield area, and I encourage local residents to get involved in the community consultation and have their say on the redevelopment.
