Consultation Opens for 2024 Petroleum Law Amendments

The department is seeking public feedback on a package of guidelines.

The Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration (DMPE) is seeking public comment on a package of draft guidelines to support the commencement of the Petroleum Legislation Amendment Act 2024 (PLAA2024).

PLAA2024 amended the State's three principal petroleum Acts to introduce, amongst other things, two new industries into Western Australia: greenhouse gas transport and storage, and the exploration and production of regulated substances (natural hydrogen and helium).

In this package, DMPE is seeking feedback on the following guidelines:

  • Applying to add regulated substance rights to a petroleum title;
  • Criteria for assessment: petroleum, geothermal energy and greenhouse gas exploration permits; and
  • Application for declaration of identified greenhouse gas storage formation.

An information sheet has been developed to assist stakeholders with navigating the package of guidelines, which includes a more detailed overview of the content and purpose of each guideline.

DMPE will provide a response to each submission received. All submissions will be collectively published and made available to the public in response to submissions documents. Submissions will be published verbatim, with the submitter listed.
