Serco's contract to manage the Adelaide Remand Centre will be extended for five years.
Serco has been running the centre since 2019, when the Liberal Marshall Government privatised the centre and signed a seven-year deal with a five-year contract extension.
Due to the terms negotiated by the former Liberal Marshall Government, renewing the contract was the only option available at this time without subjecting taxpayers to additional financial burden.
The Government will continue to have discussions with the Public Service Association (PSA), United Workers Union (UWU) and Serco to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and everyone within the prison as well as the effective operation of the centre.
As put by Michael Brown
There are a number of serious challenges in trying to reverse the Liberal's privatisation of the Adelaide Remand Centre.
In 2019, the then Liberal Marshall Government entered into a seven-year contract with a five-year renewal period that is difficult to unwind without incurring significant cost to taxpayers.
I take the management of the Adelaide Remand Centre extremely seriously and I will continue to work closely with the PSA, UWU and Serco to ensure safety within the prison.
