Government wastes $3.6 million sacking TasTAFE staff

TasTAFE's annual report has revealed the Liberal Government spent nearly $3.6 million on termination payments last year, while cutting courses, hiking fees, and sacking teachers.

Termination payments jumped from $170,000 in 2025 to $3.594 million in 2026, an increase of more than 2,000 per cent.

Over the same period, TasTAFE cut $4.3 million from wages and salaries. But more than $3.4 million of those so-called savings went straight back out the door in termination payments.

That money was spent while the Liberals cut laboratory technology, screen, and media courses, ripping away training pathways for Tasmanian industries.

And they're not finished. The Liberals plan to cut 118 TasTAFE jobs by 2029/30, including 63 teachers. Now they're paying KPMG nearly $100,000 for a "cost review", a clear sign even more cuts are on the way.

After 13 years of Liberal waste, Eric Abetz is cutting TasTAFE to pay for it and wasting millions more along the way.

Tasmania needs more tradies, health workers, aged care workers, and educators. Sacking the teachers who train them makes no sense. Paying millions to do it is even worse.

TasTAFE needs to be saved from Liberal cuts so we can train the workforce Tasmania needs.
