At the heart of every family day care service is a welcoming, home-based environment where everyday experiences become opportunities for learning and discovery.

Children build relationships and participate in everyday routines, with achievements such as learning a new skill or completing a task independently often leading to many proud moments.

In regional communities, family day care educators play especially important roles, providing flexible, home-based education and care in communities where other early childhood education and care options may be limited or unavailable.

Ruby and Larissa are two educators embracing the unique opportunities of operating a family day care service in regional communities, creating, enriching learning experiences that connect children with people, places and experiences that make their communities special.

Ruby's Family Day Care, Langhorne Creek

Nestled amongst the vineyards of Langhorne Creek, Ruby's Family Day Care offers children a warm and welcoming space to learn, play and explore.

From a cubby made for make-believe to a home garden and a chicken coop, there are op rubyportunities for discovery, creativity and inspiration around every corner.

The thoughtfully designed indoor and outdoor spaces provide endless opportunities for child-led play and exploration. Whether tending to the garden, caring for animals or engaging in imaginative play, children are encouraged to connect with nature and follow their curiosity.

"I wanted my daycare to feel warm and inviting; a space where the children could truly thrive," Ruby shared recently when reflecting on her learning environment.

Inside Ruby's Family Day Care, children can build, create and imagine, whether it's constructing with blocks, exploring train sets or enjoying a quiet story in the reading corner. Every space is thoughtfully designed to feel like home offering children a safe and welcoming environment to learn and grow.

Little Learners Family Day Care, Riverland

There is a home in the Riverland where a world of wonder and learning awaits. At Little Learners Family Day Care, setting off on new adventures with educator Larissa are a regular occurrence.

Whe larissather it's exploring local parks, discovering community spaces, observing seasonal changes or learning about the plants and wildlife that make the Riverland unique, children often return with leaves and other natural treasures, inspiring artwork and keepsakes that help capture their adventures.

"Sometimes the most valuable experiences come from exploring what is right on our doorstep," Larissa recently reflected, sharing what she loves the most about running a family day care service in her community.

For Larissa, family day care was a natural fit, offering a more personal approach to early learning where meaningful relationships with children and families are at the heart of each day.

She enjoys getting to know each child – discovering what sparks their curiosity, captures their imagination and brings them joy. By building on these individual interests, everyday moments become meaningful learning experiences.

Curating a more personal experience

Family day care services like Larissa's and Ruby's offer more than education and care. They provide personalised learning experiences tailored to each child, alongside a trusted care option for families close to home.

Family Day Care Programs Director Paula Pittam said these benefits were reflected in the unique structure of family day care.

"Small group sizes allow one qualified educator to care for up to four children from birth to five years, with the option to include two additional school-aged children," Ms Pittam said.

"This makes family day care an attractive and flexible childcare option for working families.

"Having children in small groups also allows educators to really get to know each child and design learning experiences that reflect their individual needs, interests and development."

In regional communities, family day care also plays an important role in ensuring families have access to early learning and care locally, particularly where other childcare options may be limited.

"We're increasingly seeing the need for family day care in regional communities, where access to childcare can be limited. These services play a vital role in supporting local families with quality care close to home," Ms Pittam said.

For those considering a career in family day care, the role offers a unique opportunity to combine flexibility, meaningful relationships and professional fulfilment.

An online information session will be held on Wednesday 18 November at 7pm, offering the opportunity to learn more about this rewarding pathway and meet the family day care recruitment team, who are there to support prospective educators on their journey to becoming a family day care educator.
