Intersection Upgrade Ahead Of Residential Growth

The intersection of Yalwal Road and George Evans Road in Mundamia, west of Nowra, has been upgraded thanks to the support of an interest subsidy under the Low Cost Loans Initiative program funded by the NSW Government.

The intersection serves as the entry to the University of Wollongong's Shoalhaven campus and will provide access to the new Mundamia Urban Release Area (URA), where up to 720 new homes are expected to be built.

Mayor Patricia White said the first of 308 lots had been approved and the upgrade would ensure the road network is ready to accommodate the increased traffic expected as the suburb develops.

"Around 1,800 residents are expected to move into Mundamia once the URA is fully developed, and this upgrade has significantly improved safety and traffic flow in preparation of future growth," Cr White said.

"With a clearly marked bike lane, widened shoulder and new streetlighting, the upgrade has also created a safer and more accessible environment for local residents and visitors," she said.

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, said the NSW Government provided $549,375 of funding to support Shoalhaven City Council to deliver $7.1 million of Urban Release works including the Mundamia intersection and cycleway under round 3 of the Low Cost Loans Initiative (LCLI).

"In the first four rounds of the LCLI program the NSW Government has supported 39 infrastructure projects across the state enabling approximately $793 million in infrastructure investment," Mr Scully said.

"This has actively helped support a housing pipeline of around 127,000 homes."

Kiama MP Katelin McInerney said the Minns Labor Government is helping local Councils get ahead on delivering key infrastructure upgrades to support our growing community in the Shoalhaven.

The works to be delivered by Shoalhaven City Council in Mundamia includes:

  • a fully channelised right-turn lane from Yalwal Road into George Evans Road.
  • a fully channelised left-turn lane from Yalwal Road into George Evans Road.
  • construction of two approach lanes on George Evans Road leading to Yalwal Road, extending from the existing roundabout.

The State Government's Low Cost Loans Initiative aims to make it easier for councils to fund infrastructure by covering up to 50% of the interest on eligible loans.

Cr White thanked the NSW Government for the funding associated with the project, specifically, Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, Minister for Housing, Rose Jackson, Special Minister of State, John Graham, and the Minister for Local Government, Ron Hoenig.

Further works to widen and upgrade Yalwal Road between Filter Road and George Evans Road are also progressing, with the construction tender currently under evaluation and works expected to start in early 2027.
