- The Cook Labor Government is committed to creating a new entertainment and sporting precinct
- Preliminary on-ground investigations will commence in the coming weeks
- Soil and ground water investigations beginning at Burswood Park
- Community consultation with local residents and wider community members will commence soon
Necessary preliminary on-ground investigations for a new entertainment and sporting precinct adjacent to Optus Stadium will commence in the coming weeks.
These investigations, a common occurrence at the start of major projects, will include soil and ground water testing, which will support future design and delivery.
The entertainment and sporting precinct, a key election commitment, will provide for major events and include a new outdoor amphitheatre with capacity for up to 20,000 people complementing existing entertainment venues and existing infrastructure nearby, including Optus Stadium.
The new entertainment precinct meets the priorities of the Cook Government, which include diversifying the economy by attracting and hosting major events.
Concept development will also consider facilities to support a range of sporting events including Supercars, cycling criterium and paralympic racing.
Outside of official events, the facilities would be available to the entire community year-round.
Community consultation with soon commence to inform successful concept development of the new precinct. Residents and wider community members will be contacted regarding the ways in which they can provide input into the design.
The consultation process will allow residents the opportunity to have their say on how the precinct is developed, what facilities they would like included and what further enhancements, landscaping and beautification opportunities may exist in the broader area.
The project will also consider improvements to connections and amenity between nearby residents and the new precinct/river front.
The initial site investigations to inform concept development will be undertaken throughout April and conclude in early May.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"Our goal is to design a world-class precinct that can support incredible music, entertainment and sporting events, but is primarily an incredible community asset that everyone can enjoy.
"We committed to delivering a community asset open to everyone throughout the year, and that's why it's so important we get feedback from the community on the design, what facilities they'd like to see included and what broader landscaping and beautification opportunities exist in the area.
"We will soon be contacting community members on the ways in which they can provide input into the design."
