Coordinated approach to take handbrake off electric vehicles

Business Council of Australia

The government's plan to reduce emissions by boosting electric vehicle (EV) uptake is a critical step on the path to net zero, Business Council chief executive Jennifer Westacott said.

"Australians are already choosing EVs in record numbers but our lack of broad infrastructure is a handbrake on uptake, so preparing now is a no brainer.

"We support an approach that gives consumers the choice to make this switch by removing the barriers to EV uptake.

"A coordinated approach to putting in place charging infrastructure and getting the grid ready will give consumers confidence and boost demand.

"Alongside this strategy, the government should also consider how internationally consistent vehicle emission standards could help ensure Australians have access to the best new technology and widest possible choices.

"According to Business Council research, the switch to EVs alongside hydrogen use in heavy transport could contribute around 10 per cent to our emissions reduction target."
