Correctional officer charged under new legislation over inmate relationship

A male correctional officer has been charged with a newly-legislated offence following an alleged inappropriate relationship with an inmate.

Detectives from the Corrective Services Investigation Unit commenced an investigation following reports a correctional officer and an inmate had been in an inappropriate relationship at a Western Sydney correctional facility.

Following inquiries, detectives arrested a 20-year-old man at Burwood Police Station about 9am yesterday (Monday 14 October 2019).

The man was issued a Court Attendance Notice for the offence of engage in relationship with inmate cause safety risk to correctional centre.

Police will allege in court that the man was involved in a romantic relationship with a 30-year-old inmate, which compromised his position as a correctional officer.

The man was granted strict conditional bail to appear at Burwood Local Court on Monday 25 November 2019.

Corrective Services Investigation Unit, Detective Inspector Robert Hollows, said since the legislation was introduced the NSW Police Force now have carriage of investigations of this nature.

"Any inappropriate relationships identified at correctional facilities across the state will be brought to the attention of police and charges will be laid," Det Insp Hollows said.
