Cost of living rising faster than wages under Liberals

Tasmanian Labor
  • Wage price index shows wages failing to grow quick enough
  • Public sector employees still suffering under Will Hodgman
  • Workers always suffer under Liberals
  • The ABS Wage Price Index released today shows that under Will Hodgman wages are failing to keep up with the cost of living.

Despite an increase in figures in the last quarter due to annual pay rises being taken into account, inflation is still outpacing Tasmanian's wages.

Shadow Treasurer David O'Byrne said that working people are paid less when there is a Liberal Premier.

"Despite Peter Gutwein boasting about a Golden Age, it's clear that Tasmanians are doing it tough under Will Hodgman's shambolic Minority Government," Mr O'Byrne said.

"When cost of living rises quicker than your take home pay, everything becomes a bit harder.

"Today's ABS data reveals that public sector workers are particularly suffering, falling a full percent behind inflation.

"That means a teacher on $80,000 is $800 worse off in real terms over the last year.

"Tasmanian nurses, firefighters and teachers are already some of Australia's lowest paid, and this will only make matters worse.

"Tasmanians do better with Labor Governments, and Tasmanians deserve better than what they're getting from the Hodgman Government."
