The Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the Organization of American States (OAS), Ambassador Alejandra Solano, today assumed the Chair of the OAS Permanent Council, a position she will hold until June 30.
During the ceremony, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C., Ambassador Solano stated that during her term "we will carry out our responsibilities in full adherence to the OAS Charter, with respect for all the norms that govern us, and with a clear commitment to facilitating dialogue, promoting consensus, and delivering concrete results for our countries."
She added that "we assume this responsibility, together with my team, with great humility, but also with full conviction that the task can be successfully carried forward if we work together."
For his part, the outgoing Chair of the Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Colombia, Ambassador Luis Ernesto Vargas, said: "During Colombia's tenure in the Chair, we sought to maintain a concrete agenda aimed, as much as possible, at achieving results, and we were called upon to navigate very complex and challenging moments." On the occasion, he wished Ambassador Solano success and added that "she can count on our full support; we will always be ready to assist her in achieving the best possible results."
The Vice Chair of the Permanent Council for the March-June period will be the Permanent Representative of Canada, Ambassador Stuart Savage.
The Chair of the Permanent Council rotates every three months among the Member States of the Organization, in alphabetical order. The Vice Chair also rotates every three months, in reverse alphabetical order.
