At its Ordinary Council Meeting on 27 May 2025, Leeton Shire Council resolved to adopt an adjusted remuneration structure for elected members, with Councillor and Mayoral Additional fees set at $14,500 and $32,000 respectively for the 2025/26 financial year.

The motion, moved by Councillor Sandra Nardi and carried with a 7 to 2 majority, sought to strike a fair balance between community expectations and the increasing demands placed on Councillors.

Cr Nardi explained the rationale behind the resolution, stating, "This decision reflects a considered middle ground — one that acknowledges the growing workload, responsibilities and commitments of our elected representatives, while remaining conscious of the need to minimise cost impacts on our ratepayers."

Under the new structure, the annual fees effective from 1 July 2025 will be:

  • Councillors' Annual Fee: $14,500
  • Mayoral Additional Fee: $32,000

These figures are within the range set by the Tribunal for large rural councils, which for 2025/26 is between $10,527 and $18,890 for Councillors, and between $16,820 and $40,530 for Mayoral Additional fees.

Mayor Cr George Weston endorsed the decision, stating, "Council has taken a balanced and responsible approach. The new fee levels acknowledge the onerous governance, strategic planning, and community engagement obligations Councillors face — without placing undue strain on the budget."

All Councillors are required by law to accept the resolved fee. In addition, Councillors will continue to receive superannuation contributions at the current rate of 12%, in line with the Commonwealth Superannuation Guarantee (Administration) Act 1992.

The Local Government Remuneration Tribunal conducts an annual review of fees across NSW councils, setting ranges based on classification, complexity, and community needs.
