Mitchell Shire Councillors have unanimously endorsed the Colin Officer Flora Reserve Management Plan 2025-2035, setting a clear path to protect and enhance one of the Shire's most important natural reserves over the next decade.
The plan provides a roadmap to manage the reserve's biodiversity and cultural values, while ensuring the community can continue to enjoy the site for education, recreation and connection with nature.
Colin Officer Flora Reserve, a 13.7Ha bushland area in Broadford, is home to significant remnant native vegetation and threatened species and is valued as a space for schools, community groups and locals to engage with the natural environment.
The new plan sets out actions to care for the reserve over the next 10 years, balancing conservation with community use and recognising the importance of First Nations cultural heritage.
Key actions include weed control, habitat restoration, protection of cultural sites, and expanded opportunities for education and community involvement.
Council's work in developing and delivering this plan is made possible through its annual budget. Each year, Council invests in a wide range of environmental services - from on-ground works in reserves to programs that protect biodiversity and strengthen sustainability - ensuring our natural areas continue to thrive for the community and future generations.
