Leeton Shire Council has endorsed a series of improvement opportunities following the completion of its Parks and Open Spaces Service Review.
The review, undertaken as part of Council's ongoing commitment to continuous improvement, assessed how current services align with community expectations, strategic priorities and legislative requirements.
The findings confirm that parks and open spaces across the Shire are generally well managed, with strong presentation standards and low levels of customer complaints.
Mayor Cr George Weston said the review provides a clear pathway to strengthen services while maintaining a focus on long-term sustainability, stating, "This review gives us a practical and measured way to enhance how we plan, deliver and maintain our parks and open spaces.
"It ensures we are continuing to meet community expectations while also identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and value for money."
The review identified the following improvement opportunities, grouped around service levels, resourcing, financial sustainability and operational practices.
- Defining and reviewing service levels for open spaces and asset maintenance
- Strengthening reporting to ensure service standards are met
- Reviewing parks hierarchy and long-term planning frameworks
- Improving asset data, mapping and integration systems
- Exploring cost recovery opportunities and reviewing fees and charges
- Assessing service delivery models for efficiency gains
- Investigating volunteer and community partnership programs
- Enhancing tree management through arborist support
- Improving weed management and maintenance practices
- Enhancing access to quality sporting surfaces and infrastructure
- Reviewing planting approaches for sustainability and efficiency
Several actions have already commenced, with further initiatives to be prioritised through Council's future operational planning, budgeting and workforce planning processes. Progress reports will be provided to Council's senior management team, Council and the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee.
The review also draws on stakeholder feedback from the Leeton On The Go Towards 2035 engagement, which highlighted priorities such as improved sporting field amenities, increased tree canopy and interest in community gardens.
