Council Boosts Sports Safety with De-Escalation Training

Georges River Council

At its meeting on 23 June 2025, Georges River Council resolved to promote safety and respect in local sporting matches. This decision shows the Council's commitment to creating safe, inclusive environments. It also reinforces the importance of respect in community sport, especially during games held at Council-managed facilities.

Earlier this year, Council teamed up with the ADF Good Sports Program and the NSW Office of Sport. They held a joint workshop on respect and safety for the Sports Advisory Committee.

Council then collaborated with Football St George Association to offer free De-Escalation Training. It was delivered by the NSW Office of Sport.

The training provided coaches, volunteers, and officials with effective strategies. Participants learned practical ways to manage tough behaviour. This helps create a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable sporting environment. Participants learned how to:

  • Identify early signs of conflict.

  • Stay calm under pressure.

  • Communicate effectively to prevent escalation.

  • Handle different types of aggressors, including those affected by drugs or alcohol.

Representatives from the following local sporting organisations attended:

  • Evergreen Soccer Friends Group Inc.

  • Kogarah Waratah Football Club.

  • Peakhurst United FC.

  • Banksia Tigers.

  • Soccer De Brazil.

  • St George Little Athletics.

  • St George Junior Rugby League.

  • Football St George Association.

Council knows local government is key to creating safe, inclusive, and respectful spaces in community sport. Council will continue working proactively via the Sports Advisory Committee to:

  • Promote respectful conduct on and off the field.

  • Prevent violence, abuse, and antisocial behaviour during matches.

  • Support referees, coaches, and volunteers with conflict resolution tools and mental health support.

  • Foster sportsmanship, community values, and respectful conduct at all matches.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Respect and safety are at the heart of community sport.

"By equipping our clubs with de-escalation skills, we are ensuring that players, officials, and families can enjoy sport in a safe and supportive environment."

Council is planning future workshops for local sports groups. This maintains its role as a leader in safety, respect, and positive experiences in community sport.
