The Homework Mentoring Program sees volunteers assist migrant and refugee secondary school students to improve their English literacy while helping them with their homework and assignments.
Council is looking for a wide range of volunteers with skills and knowledge to lend a hand to Townsville's next generation, with adults, retirees and university students all encouraged to get involved.
Senior high school students are also welcome to volunteer to help out their fellow students.
Council Community and Cultural Development Committee Chairperson Cr Ann-Maree Greaney said the program has been running successfully for many years but after COVID-19 the volunteer pool has become low.
"The Homework Mentoring Program has always been a great help to our refugee and migrant community and volunteering for it is a great chance to really make a difference in our community," Cr Greaney said.
"This program really is vitally important in assisting these students with their schoolwork and it's hugely rewarding to work with them and see their improvement.
"I'd encourage people of all ages to get involved and assist in Council's efforts to connect with and learn more about others in our community."
The program is held at CityLibraries Aitkenvale and runs every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3.30pm-5pm during the state school term, with all volunteers needing to be eligible to get a blue card (working with children).
This year's program got underway on Tuesday 31 January.
