The Rockhampton Region Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has moved to the Lean Forward phase following advice from the Bureau of Meteorology that the Fitzroy River is expected to peak near a minor flood level of 7m early next week.

Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group Mayor Tony Williams said the action is not cause for community alarm but rather confirmation that the LDMG is being proactive and making appropriate preparations.

"We are closely monitoring the conditions of the Fitzroy River as water from the upper catchment areas move downstream," Mayor Williams said.

"Put simply, the Lean Forward phase is for the LDMG to continue its preparations as floodwater tracks through our systems ahead of peaking early next week.

"While we don't anticipate that residential properties will be impacted, we are preparing facilities that may be in low lying areas such as sporting fields and the riverside precinct.

"This includes the likely closure of the Derby Street Lower car park and the Archer Street car park from Sunday."

Council is continuing to monitor the situation and will keep the community updated on predicted peak heights and potential impacts.
