Over 130 kilometres of road repairs, grading and re-sheeting have been delivered across 80 different roads in the Rockhampton region as Rockhampton Regional Council focuses on delivering better roads for locals.

The works which have taken place over the first quarter of 2026 are part of Council's Better, Safer Roads Program and have benefitted areas including Westwood, Alton Downs, Mount Morgan, Parkhurst, Gracemere and Bouldercombe.

Council's Better, Safer Roads Program plays a critical role in keeping communities connected and ensuring residents can travel safely across the region every day.

Over a one year period, Council completed more than 500 kilometres of road repairs and improvements.

Council manages a significant and diverse road network of more than 1,970 kilometres, including:

  • 870km of sealed urban roads
  • 1,109km of rural unsealed roads
  • 223km of footpaths
  • 14km of shared cycle paths
  • 370km of stormwater pipes and culverts
  • 18 footbridges

The works have been undertaken by Council's Civil Works department which completes ongoing inspections, maintenance, and upgrades across the network to ensure it remains safe, accessible, and resilient, particularly in rural areas where road conditions can change quickly due to weather and heavy use.

Quotes attributable to Mayor Tony Williams:

"This is the kind of everyday work we deliver as a Council that often goes unnoticed, but it makes a real difference to people's lives.

"It's about making sure residents can get to work, school, and home safely, no matter where they live in our region.

"It's about maintaining and improving the infrastructure people rely on every single day, even if it's not always visible."

Quotes attributable to Infrastructure Councillor Marika Taylor:

"Our unsealed road network is extensive, and maintaining it requires constant attention, particularly after wet weather or increased traffic.

"Grading and re-sheeting improves surface quality, reduces dust, and helps extend the life of the road, which ultimately delivers better value for ratepayers.

"This work might not always be visible, but it is essential especially for rural residents who rely on these roads every day.

"We're committed to maintaining a high standard right across the region, ensuring our road network remains safe, functional, and fit for purpose."
