Mayor Kate Hanson and Councillor Chris Potter met with staff and furry friends at the Colac Otway Shire Council's local laws office today in support of RSPCA's annual Cupcake Day, which has been expanded into a month-long awareness campaign this year.

"RSPCA carries out a very important role within the community to assist with animal cruelty and the rehoming of unwanted or neglected animals, and does so with limited resources," said Mayor Hanson. "While we can't come together for a bake-off this year, it's still important to donate to RSPCA if you can this month."

In the 2021–22 year, Council rehomed 37 cats and 10 dogs, with free registration for the current year when rehomed through the shire pound. Council officers work together with the RSCPA and attend to animal cruelty complaints, liaising with RSCPA inspectors if needed.

"People may not realise that the RSPCA advocates for the welfare of animals across a range of industries, including saleyard centres," said Mayor Hanson. "Animal welfare is our biggest priority at the Colac Regional Saleyards. We are able to liaise with AgVic and RSPCA directly to ensure we always meet conditions and standards surrounding the safe movement of animals through our saleyards."

This year, biosecurity and animal health are very much in the spotlight due to the proximity of foot and mouth disease detected in Indonesia.

"Now more than ever, it is important that our saleyards continues to work closely with animal welfare groups in the process of identification and regulation of animal disease," said Mayor Hanson.
