Kiama Community Radio will be able to enhance its ability to serve the community, broaden its programming, and continue expanding the reach of local broadcasting after signing a five-year licence to remain at its Terralong Street studio.
The signing of the lease at the Kiama Municipal Council-owned property means KCR can expand its operations, giving the organisation stability to plan and grow.
Kiama Mayor Cameron McDonald joined KCR president Glenn Shepherd and public officer Madeleine Scarfe at a signing ceremony along with several volunteers and on-air presenters.
"KCR has only been around for six years, but it's become a special part of our community, providing plenty of information and entertainment for local residents," Mayor McDonald said.
"The fact that KCR is able to produce so much quality content each week for an operation that it is run by volunteers is amazing.
"Council is only too happy to help the KCR crew in continuing their tremendous contribution to our area."
Mr Shepherd said KCR has maintained a longstanding and positive relationship with Kiama Council.
"Council's decision to grant KCR a five‑year licence to occupy three rooms at 61 Terralong Street represents a significant milestone in this partnership and provides KCR with a permanent home for a good period of time," he said.
The licence enables KCR to build a second broadcast studio, supporting increased program capacity, improved volunteer training and expanded program development opportunities.
"We are delighted to remain in this building working alongside the Kiama Business Network who are also an important partner," Ms Scarfe said.
"We can now start building the second studio which we desperately need now that we are up to 30 hours a week of live presenters with specialist local content."
KCR will undertake internal modifications to create a professional, purpose‑built radio station environment that meets contemporary broadcasting needs.
The space also allows for the development of dedicated administrative and meeting areas, strengthening organisational coordination and volunteer support.
