Council Launches Teen Mental Health Aid at Rivendell

The City of Canada Bay was proud to support the roll out of a Teen Mental Health First Aid program for every student at Rivendell School in Concord West recently.

Delivered over three sessions across three weeks, the course equips students in Years 7-12 with the practical tools to recognise mental health challenges, respond effectively, and connect peers with trusted adults and professional help when needed.

City of Canada Bay Mayor Michael Megna welcomed the initiative, reinforcing the importance of community and school-based mental health programs that empower young people to care for one another.

"When young people are going through a difficult time, it's often their friends that they turn to first for support. Teen Mental Health First Aid empowers young people with the skills and confidence to provide that support to their peers," he said.

The program addresses common mental health crises such as suicidal thoughts, self-injury, bullying, abuse, and substance misuse - all within a safe and supported learning environment. The program also strengthens mental health awareness among young people and teaches them how to approach a classmate they may be concerned about.

"Building the health literacy of our students and community, with a research-based common language, is a key driver of equity and excellence at Rivendell School. I'd like to express my thanks to the students at Rivendell School for their collective voice, advocating for an opportunity to learn more about this community-wide issue. We are delighted to partner with Canada Bay Council on this important work," Rivendell School Principal, Patrick Faucher said.

"Mental health struggles impact a huge number of young people and programs like this can help build understanding, reduce stigma and create a safer community. It's about creating a culture of care - where students look out for one another, know when and how to ask for help, and understand they're not alone," added Mayor Michael Megna.
