Georges River Council has endorsed the next stage of upgrades for Mortdale town centre at its Council meeting on Monday, 25 May 2026. This builds on previous works already delivered to enhance the look and feel of the area.
Council examined a report on new streetscape enhancements and supported more greening works, like new planter boxes and street trees to be delivered over 2026/27.
Enhancements already completed include:
-
Decorative 'fairy lights' installed on two mature trees along Morts Road.
-
A semi-mature Magnolia tree planted at the corner of Oxford Street and Morts Road.
Further improvements are currently underway and are expected to be completed by 30 June 2026, include:
-
New bench seating near the pedestrian crossing on Cook Street.
-
Timber cladding to existing concrete seating areas at key locations along Morts Road.
These works will improve comfort, accessibility and amenity in high‑use public areas.
The investigation found ways to make the town centre greener and suggested adding up to 15 planter boxes and two more street trees. This will help lower heat, boost shade, and improve the streetscape.
The current program builds on the Stage 1 streetscape improvements from 2024 along Morts Road. This included new paving, street furniture, and better lighting. It also had underground utilities, new trees, and traffic upgrades.
The latest updates come from community feedback. They include more greenery, seating, and activities in the town centre. As works progress, nearby residents and businesses will be notified in advance. Signage and direct communication will be provided at least two weeks before works begin.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said the upgrades will make Mortdale more vibrant and appealing for the community.
"Council has heard the community's feedback and is committed to improving Mortdale Village, making it a more welcoming and enjoyable place to visit," Mayor Borg said.
"These enhancements, from new seating to more greenery and lighting, will create a safer, more comfortable and vibrant town centre for residents, visitors and local businesses."
These improvements show Council's ongoing effort to enhance local centres. They aim to create vibrant, accessible, and inviting public spaces in the Georges River area.
