The Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) President's Award for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion acknowledges Council's leadership in developing planning initiatives that challenge traditional approaches and deliver better outcomes for residents, visitors and the broader community.
A key achievement behind this recognition was the development of pioneering planning controls to support our neurodivergent community. This cross-Council collaborative effort led by the strategic planning team is believed to be among the first of its kind.
By embedding inclusion into its planning framework, Council is helping to create places that better meet the needs of diverse communities and improve the experience of the city for all residents and visitors.

A draft amendment to the Ryde Development Control Plan 2014, which introduces a new Part 9.6 Neuroinclusive Design, will be on public exhibition later this year. The exhibition period will provide the community with an opportunity to review the proposed planning controls and provide feedback.
Council is keen to hear from neurodivergent people, their families and support networks, carers, advocates and the wider community. By incorporating lived experience into the planning process, Council aims to help create more inclusive, accessible and welcoming places for everyone.
