Council has been recognised for its sustainability prowess after being awarded the Sustainability Advantage Silver status recently.
The environmental milestone program, facilitated by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE), recognises environmental improvements made by organisations.
Council was awarded Bronze accreditation in June 2019 and implemented a number of programs to achieve silver status, including:
- Development and adoption of the Sustainability Strategy 2020-24 to address the management of waste, energy, water and resource use;
- Identification of climate change risks for Council operations;
- Staff engagement projects;
- Engagement with external stakeholders on more sustainable options including road recycling opportunities and tree guards for all tree planting events; and
- Improvements in resource efficiencies including a new street sweeping contract reducing waste sent directly to landfill.
Mayor of Camden, Cr Theresa Fedeli, said it was important to work towards improving environmental health.
"Council is focused on striving to improve sustainable practices while also being a leader to its community," Cr Fedeli said.
"Changes that we make today will have a great benefit for our future generations and it is important for us to be on top of our sustainability game every day.
"I thank NSW Minister for Energy and Environment Matthew Kean, Sustainability Advantage and the NSW Government for their recognition of Council's work."
