Council response to language used in today's meeting

Statement.jpg

Snowy Monaro Regional Council wishes to express disappointment at Cr Mitchell's use of inappropriate language directed towards another councillor during this afternoon's meeting in Cooma.

Respectful debate is the cornerstone of any democracy, and our local democracy here in the Snowy Monaro is no different. Personal attacks and name calling have no place in our Council, or at our meetings.

Council requires respectful conduct from our community when interacting with our organisation, and we can only make this request of them if we conduct ourselves with the same respect.

Cr Mitchell's comments do not meet Council's code of meeting practice, and do not reflect Council's values, or the standards of conduct and respect we strive to hold ourselves to as an organisation.

We acknowledge and appreciate that Cr Mitchell quickly apologised to Cr Frolich for the offensive remark he directed at her.
