For Thomas Gagliano-Buckley and his STOMP bandmates, playing live gigs isn't just about entertaining a crowd - it's about feeling alive.
It's fitting, then, that the band, comprised of four mates from Hunter School of Performing Arts, will perform at this year's MAP mima Rocks music festival, aiming to breathe life into the region's live music scene for up-and-coming acts.
MAP mima Rocks, described as a "free, all-ages celebration of music, energy and community", will be held on Saturday 26 September at the Multi-Arts Pavilion, mima, in Speers Point Park.
The day kicks off at 3pm and features five bands and a DJ, with STOMP headlining the show with a 50-minute set starting at 7.40pm.
Earlier this year the band took out YouthRock, the annual NSW school band competition, whose alumni include Silverchair, Alex Lloyd and Hayley Warner.
STOMP also played its debut single at Star Struck, with full orchestra backing.
"That was an amazing experience," Gagliano-Buckley said, with more of the same expected at MAP mima Rocks.
"Expect a story to be told throughout the gig," he said.
"We play experimental music that's very arty."
Gagliano-Buckley said MAP mima Rocks gave diverse local bands the opportunity to not only perform in new places but to get to know the community, and vice versa.
Other bands set to perform include Glycerine, Smacked Youth, The Janes and Empress, with DJ Big Rex spinning tunes live.
Lake Macquarie City Council Manager Arts, Culture and Tourism Jacqui Hemsley said it was important to nurture and encourage creativity in the local community.
"MAP mima Rocks is about creating opportunities for emerging musicians to perform in a professional setting while connecting with new audiences," she said.
"We have an incredible depth of musical talent across Lake Macquarie and the Hunter, and events like this help showcase that talent while strengthening our local live music scene.
"The festival also provides a welcoming and accessible space for people of all ages to come together and enjoy original music in one of the city's best outdoor locations."
Food trucks and licensed bar facilities will be available on site, with festivalgoers encouraged to bring picnic rugs and low-back chairs.
